How to Apply Pomade for a Classic Greaser Look

The greaser look is timeless — slicked back, high shine, and effortlessly cool. Whether you're going for a full-on 1950s rockabilly vibe or a modern take on the classic, the secret is knowing how to apply pomade correctly. Here's everything you need to know.

What You'll Need

Before you start, grab your tools: a fine-tooth comb, a blow dryer (optional but helpful), and the right pomade for your hair type. For the classic greaser look, an oil-based pomade delivers the highest shine and strongest hold.

Step 1: Start with Damp or Dry Hair

Oil-based pomades work best on dry hair. Towel dry after washing and let your hair air dry, or use a blow dryer to add volume before styling.

Step 2: Scoop the Right Amount

Start small — about a dime-sized amount for short hair, a quarter-sized amount for medium length. Rub the pomade between your palms until it's warm and evenly distributed. Add more till you get the desired amount of shine and hold.

Step 3: Work It Through Your Hair

Apply from the back of your head forward, working the pomade through the mid-lengths and ends first. Avoid applying directly to the roots at first — this prevents a  weighted down look and helps protect the pores of the skin from excess blockage from the pomade.

Step 4: Comb It Back

Using a fine-tooth comb, slick your hair straight back or to the side depending on your preferred style. For a pompadour, use the comb to push the front section upward and back. Work in smooth, deliberate strokes.

Step 5: Refine and Set

Once your shape is set, use the comb to clean up the sides and tighten the part if you're going for a side-swept look. A light pass with a boar bristle brush adds extra shine.

Getting Both High Shine & High Hold

The lighter and more oily the more shine and the heavier the pomade the more hold but less shine. It is best to apply the heavy or medium hold pomade first and then style into the basic shape. Then apply a good amount of a light pomade or spray sheen to get the shine. Finish off the style with the comb as you smooth it out with your hand.

Choosing the Right Pomade

Not all pomades are created equal. Here's a quick guide:

Pro Tips

  • Less is more — you can always add more pomade, but too much makes hair look greasy rather than styled.
  • See the tip above about getting both high shine & High Hold.
  • Blow drying before applying adds volume and makes the style last longer.
  • Oil-based pomades build up over time — check out our guide on how to wash out oil-based pomades for proper removal.
